Land Cruiser 200 Ideas

The LC200 handling and tyre wear suffer badly from lack of castor & camber when the front is lifted more than 50mm from standard. Restore your front end alignment and improve highway touring as well as extending your tyre life.

Brown Davis 180lt rear tank

Need a bit more range for outback touring? Always worried about how much fuel you ahave and whether you can get to that town 1000Km away? Take the stress out of long distance touring with a Brown Davis 180lt replacement for the 45lt sub-tank. Note- this fits where the spare wheel goes so you'll need another home for that - see wheel carriers below...

Hitting the sandy slopes or doing some rock crawling? Underbody protection will help ensure you make it to the other side and home again. A Brown Davis under-tray is just what you need to keep your oils out of the environment and in your car where they belong.

Since we're talking about sandy slopes, you don't want the kids dragging too much of that stuff into your carpets. A deep-dish moulded floormat is what you need to protect the carpet and catch it all ready for disposal back at camp.

Kaymar wheel carriers are the best out there. Made from solid steel they securely mount one or two wheels safely out of the way making space for a long-range fuel tank or just to carry extra spares. Don't need two wheels - fit a jerry can instead.

Black Duck seat covers protect your seats and look great. Now available in traditional canvas and a stylish new wetsuit type of material. They fit well, are easy to clean, protect your investment and have some accessories.

A winch is a great insurance policy against bogging, or an awesome tool for pulling out trees, straining up fences, clearing tracks etc. We stock and recommend Carbon winches as a great value proposition with good features, low weight and a very reasonable price.

On-board air supply is almost a standard these days. Integration into the rear quarter panel of the 200 Series was a great step forward in integrating this item out of the way in a dry spot.

We've been fitting Itechworld's lithium batteries under-bonnet and in-cab for about five years. A great number have done desert crossings and hot summers without problem. They've proven reliable and with the range increasing all the time we have no hesitation in recommending them. See below for a picture of our typical under-bonnet installation on a 200 Series with a current monitoring shunt for a guage in the rear of the car.

AdvancedIce create a variety of electonic modules to interface caravan cameras and navigation systems into the factory screen rather than onto a small mirror or 7" dash-top display. It makes the display far easier to read and you can choose which camera feed to display when you select reverse gear. Some versions are now discontinued so they're not available for all car models.

Using the side wings of drawers is a great place to mount switches and guages that are accessible when the tailgate is open, and protected when it's closed. Go to a little bit of extra effort to wire them into the car's park lights for a little extra professional touch.

Add lights to your roof rack, then add switches for them to the dashboard as well. Great for lighting up the driveway or surrounding areas without leaving your seat.

The 200 suffers from poor transmission programming. If there's one thing Toyota did poorly was to choose an under-powered controller then poorly program it on top. The two main things it does which could be better are:-

1) not locking up the torque converter often enough leading to

  • Unnecessary slippage and fuel wastage
  • Generating heat while it's slipping, which can lead to engine power reduction on steep hills
  • Not engine-braking on downhill driving
  • Un-locking too readily rather than using the engine's torque to accelerate

2) Not using 6th gear early enough, dropping down a gear too readily and not using all the torque of the motor. It's like it was programmed for a 4 cylinder motor rather than a big diesel.

There are solutions to these two issues though. Both were developed many years ago and have had thousands of trouble-free installations over the years. The first is to install a 'lockup kit' to override the factory programming and lockup earlier so you can cruise at 80km/h+ at maximum efficiency, while having full engine-braking on downhill descents. A secondary feature is the ability to lock at low speeds for use on sand or cruising on country roads.

Secondly, the other available solution is to re-map the transmission shift points so it picks up gears earlier and doesn't down-shift so readily. This improves fuel economy and makes for more relaxed cruising. There is a tradeoff however, some gear shifts will be a bit jerkier.
